Value Underfoot

Recently, I had the opportunity to meet a lovely Afghani woman who was selling her collection of beautiful rugs. Her beauty and grace were on display as she shared with us her story about finding the courage to end her unhappy marriage and the necessity to sell her rugs. I quickly fell in love with an entry way rug with my favorite color orange--so detailed and interesting.

But what stood out to me was the back with all its crazy thread ends and messiness.

After bringing my rug home, I started to think about how the rug could be a metaphor for so many of us.  Complicated, beautiful at first glance, but at a deeper inspection we see ourselves entangled and even, unfinished.  Sometimes life can be painfully hard.  But in the midst of one tragic story or another, our homes can be places of refuge and peace where beautiful things, whether simple or intricate, can fill us with such joy and satisfaction that we never want to leave it.  That's how I feel when I look at my rug.  I think of my sisters around the world diligently providing for their families through their gorgeous wares.

I feel privileged to have this rug in my home for many different reasons.  It's my new favorite and I'm sure it will be for a long time to come.

From Our Home to Yours,
